CSA – Compliance, Safety and Accountability

What does CSA mean to you as a Shipper?
As a shipper using a motor carrier to transport your cargo, you need to be knowledgeable about CSA. When it comes to the liability of your shipment, you as the shipper become involved and must exercise care and due diligence. Shippers will be held liable on the same theories as Brokers and Carriers are being held liable.

CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative designed to assess and improve the safety performance of motor carriers and drivers so that there are fewer crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

Big Freight Systems is committed to picking up and delivering your freight on time, damage free. You can help us do this and stay in compliance with CSA, by:

  • Providing flexibility with pickup and delivery times
  • Securing /packaging all freight properly to prevent cargo securement violations
  • Ensuring accurate shipping weight to prevent overloading
  • Avoiding excessive wait times in loading that could affect drivers’ hours of service compliance
  • Completing shipping documents properly (especially hazmat paperwork)
  • Providing proper placards for hazmat loads (when applicable)
  • Allowing drivers access to the loading process to ensure proper freight securement

The winner of the 2010 MTA-Volvo Trucks Canada Driver of the Year was announced at the 2010 MTA Driver Awards Banquet, held on Saturday, June 26. This year's winner was Bill Gagnon of Big Freight Systems Inc.

Kevin Schers (right) of Volvo Trucks Canada presents Bill Gagnon (left) with his award.

Bill began his career forty three years ago as a truck driver with the Canadian Armed Forces. He worked as a driver in the military until 1983, at which time he moved into the trucking industry.

Bill has been described as "courteous and on-time, all the time", as someone who "goes out of his way to make himself available for any job". Bill has a customer-first attitude, but is also a strong team player. He is willing to help new drivers to the company, and is willing to lend a hand to drivers when it comes to securing and tarping their loads. He has a great relationship with his dispatch team and other office staff.

He is still averaging 110,000 miles annually and currently works as a highway/long-haul driver, traveling coast to coast in Canada. He has taken a number of training courses, including PDIC & LCV, WHMIS, Adverse Conditions Training, Basic First Aid, PIP and C-TPAT training, TDG, hours of service, cargo securement, air brake adjustment, and winter driving. The entire team at Big Freight is proud of Bill as he is a true professional and wonderful ambassador for the industry. Congratulations!
