Employee Profile - Esfir Goncharova

August 28th, 2019

Get to know the team at Big Freight! We will be releasing a series of blog posts with interviews featuring our professional drivers and staff.  We will cycle through the different departments until we get to know a little bit more about everyone.  Today, we are featuring Esfir Goncharova in the Operations department.

What is your current role at Big Freight?

I am student at the University of Manitoba and was hired through the Asper School of Business’ Co-operative program.  I am interning on a 4-month term as the Operations and Supply Chain Associate

What are you doing at school?

I am working towards a Bachelor of Commerce with majors in Logistics & Supply Chain Management as well as Finance.  This September I will be going into my 3rd year.

I’ve also chosen to broaden my university experience by joining a couple of extra-curricular activities.  I am one of the co-chairs for the Business and Accounting Student Case Competition (BASCC) as a part of the Asper School of Business Accounting Association (ASBAA) where I direct my team in planning the big event.  I am also the Director of IT for the University of Manitoba Human Resource Association (UMHRA) where I work on our website, manage the group email, etc.

What are some of your favourite pass-times outside of work and school?

I enjoy running; I ran a half marathon 2 years in a row, but next year plan to run a full in the Manitoba Marathon.

During the winter months, I enjoy getting out on the rink at least once a week for figure skating.

Unrelated to physical activity, I like working on solving rubik’s cubes.  I taught myself to solve them with my current record sitting at 1 minute and 10 seconds!  I am now moving on to solving 5x5 and 7x7 cubes.

Tell us about your favourite Big Freight memory.

Attending the Big Freight Golf Tournament that we had this summer.  I was on a team with Shane Morrow, Casey Neilson, and Nathalie Ikkert.  Despite all the trials and tribulations of losing the golf ball in the bushes and Casey’s reckless driving with the golf kart, I survived my very first time golfing.

Tell us about your recent achievement with Manitoba Trucking Association.

I feel honoured to have accepted 2 awards given out be the Manitoba Trucking Association: the Edward M. Ewanochko Transportation Scholarship Award and the Winnipeg Transportation Club Scholarship.  Both awards are provided to assist students pursuing a post-secondary education in a field related to the transportation industry.  The scholarships were created to promote professional growth within the truck and transportation industry and I’d like to thank Big Freight for helping me in this endeavour.

Tell us a little-known fun fact about yourself.

I like learning languages.  I am fluent in English and Russian, and I am working on Ukrainian, German, and Spanish.  Having a wide range in languages I can speak also helps me in my passion to travel.  The German came in handy when I was in Germany and I am considering the Asper Exchange Program, doing one of my semesters in a Spanish speaking country.

What do you like about the co-op experience at Big Freight?

This experience has been extremely valuable for my studies because I had the opportunity to apply what I learned in school in a practical way.  I got a lot of exposure in operations and logistics which helps me in my Logistics & Supply Chain Management major.  I also appreciate that I didn’t feel like I was “just an intern”; I felt like a key contributor to the company with all the hands-on and practical experience that I gained.

Big Freight wants to thank Esfir for the contributions she has made to the team in the short time she has been here.  We want to also congratulate and commend her for the awards that she was presented by the MTA.

Esfir, it has been a pleasure having you on the team, and we wish you the best of luck as you return to school this fall.
